Fallen Moon - Luke Jerram

Bridgwater Town Deal is delighted to be presenting Luke Jerram’s Fallen Moon Installation on the Bridgwater Docks from Monday 14 October to Sunday 3 November 2024.

Ahead of its regeneration, the Bridgwater docks will host Luke Jerram’s Fallen Moon installation.

This is a really exciting exhibition that will draw crowds from all over to view it, we hope you will enjoy this on a greater scale as a resident or business in the area.

Fallen Moon is Luke Jerram’s brand new touring artwork.

Created from NASA data, the sculpture is a giant 10m diameter replica of the Moon, illuminated on the water. The artwork is 350,000 times smaller than the real Moon with each centimetre of the internally lit sculpture describing 3.5 km of the Moon’s surface.

The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA award winning composer Dan Jones.

Fallen Moon was inspired by the artist’s hometown of Bristol and noticing the huge tidal variation as he cycled over the Avon Cut to his studio each day.

The moon has always inspired humanity, acting as a ‘cultural mirror’ to society, reflecting the ideas and beliefs of all people around the world. Over the centuries, the moon has been interpreted as a god and as a planet. It has been used as a timekeeper, calendar and been a source of light to aid night-time navigation. Throughout history the moon has inspired artists, poets, scientists, writers and musicians the world over. The ethereal blue light cast by a full moon, the delicate crescent following the setting sun, or the mysterious dark side of the moon has evoked passion and exploration.

Different cultures around the world have their own religious, historical, cultural and scientific relationships to the moon. And yet somehow, despite these differences, the moon connects us all.

Fallen Moon allows us to observe and contemplate cultural similarities and differences around the world and consider the latest moon science.

Luke Jerram’s arts practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live arts projects. Jerram is known worldwide for his large-scale public engagement artworks. His artwork, The Museum of the Moon, is one of Luke’s newest arts projects that has caught the public’s imagination which is currently touring. Experienced by more than 20 million people worldwide, the artwork has toured India with the British Council, been presented at the Commonwealth Games in Australia and was exhibited in Aarhus, Denmark for the European Capital of Culture.

The Fallen Moon will be installed over the weekend of 12-13 October and will be removed on Monday 4 November.

During the installation there will be some disruption around the docks area as there will be a crane on site to enable the installation.

The installation itself will be secured in place with underwater concrete blocks and should not affect wildlife below the surface.

The Fallen Moon is lit for the duration of the exhibition but the light spill is minimal and should not affect residents.

There will be a sound presentation that is played through speakers nightly from 6pm-8pm on a low decibel.

For the safety of visitors, residents and the exhibition there will be overnight security from approx. 6pm-6am.

There will be some community events taking place during the time the Fallen Moon is installed, keep up to date with what’s happening on the Bridgwater Town Deal Website
